Xiu Xiu announce duets album with “A Bottle of Rum”

A collaboration with Liz Harris, aka ambient artist Grouper.

Xiu Xiu have announced their new album OH NO with the single “A Bottle of Rum” featuring Liz Harris, aka ambient artist Grouper.

The dreamy track arrived with a music video directed by Xiu Xiu’s Angela Seo and also starring fellow band member Jamie Stewart. It’s the first of a three-part noir story written by friend of the band (and past drummer) David Kendrick. “In keeping with the times, most of this was intentionally DIY, shot alone or with just a couple of friends and a tripod,” Seo said in a statement.

According to press materials, Stewart had drunkenly written the song on a bajo quinto (a ten-string guitar-like instrument) while listening to a Grouper song: “Heavy Water/I’d Rather Be Sleeping” from her 2008 album Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill.

“I had asked Liz Harris, who is an old friend, if she would sing on this new record of duets,”he explained in a statement. “Initially I thought of her for another song but she specifically, although not knowing she had been the inspiration behind it in the first place, asked to be on this one. If the stars ever have aligned… well then.”

“A Bottle of Rum” is one of 15 duets on OH NO with the likes of Sharon Van Etten, Chelsea Wolfe, Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier, Owen Pallett, Alice Bag and more. It arrives March 26 on Polyvinyl. Watch the new music video below:
