In a surprise move, Rivers Cuomo on Friday dropped a brand-new track, “Medicine for Melancholy.” And like any good Weezer tune, the earworm will have you humming along to its melody well after the last guitar chord has rung out.
While there hasn’t been talk about a new Cuomo solo effort, “Medicine for Melancholy” may hint at one. Unlike Weezer’s occasionally brash output, this song is all polished pop, with a bouncy beat, sing-along chorus and enough handclaps to give the next twee band a run for their money. And when Cuomo chants, “We got that Friday feeling,” you’ll want to break out into song and dance, too.
