Weezer cover Toto’s “Africa”

After much persuasion from a teen fan, the band caved and finally did it.

Weezer have finally blessed the rains down in Africa. The band took to social media earlier today to post a cover of Toto’s “Africa”—and we’ve only got one special fan to thank.

For months, Twitter user @WeezerAfrica had been campaigning for the LA rockers to cover the classic hit. After a series of rejections and trolling—the “Buddy Holly” outfit had previously released their version of Toto’s “Rosanna” instead—the fan’s request was finally fulfilled. And the cover is as glorious as you’d expect it to be.

Weezer’s rendition doesn’t stray too far away from the original, injecting a little more synths for a glamorous modern makeover. The fan responded on Twitter: “I don’t know what’s next. Just let me enjoy this for a while.”

Even Toto extended their gratitude towards Rivers Cuomo and the rest of the California Kids. “Very flattered and thanks Weezer. We recorded this -2nd take NO rehearsal in 1981. […] We were kids. Lived in the studio working on our stuff and every session in LA. Best times ever! Hope we meet someday,” guitarist Steve Lukather tweeted.
