On a recent outing at BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, YUNGBLUD performed a mashup of Taylor Swift’s “Cardigan” with Avril Lavigne’s 2002 hit single, “I’m With You.”
YUNGBLUD’s performance featured the artist on an acoustic guitar and three string players. Though billed as a cover of “Cardigan,” it strikes a pretty equal balance between elements of both songs, including both verses and choruses.
“Cardigan” is cut from Swift’s recent surprise LP Folklore, which saw the pop singer explore indie folk sounds with the help from co-producers Jack Antonoff and The National’s Aaron Dessner.
Swift praised YUNGBLUD’s rendition on Twitter, saying it “took my breath away.” She added, “I’m honored to hear ‘Cardigan’ intertwined with the wonderful Avril Lavigne’s masterpiece ‘I’m With You’. Bravo and thanks YUNGBLUD!”
YUNGBLUD’s appearance on BBC Radio 1 was part of the radio station’s annual Live Lounge Month. This time around Miley Cyrus, London Grammar, Anne Marie, Biffy Clyro, Jorja Smith, Little Mix and Arlo Parks all participated in the event.
Besides the mashup, YUNGBLUD also performed “Strawberry Lipstick,” a single from his upcoming sophomore album Weird! due out November 13. Watch that here:
