St Vincent has announced her new album Daddy’s Home with the release of its lead single, “Pay Your Way in Pain.”
Daddy’s Home will be the first album from St Vincent—real name Annie Clark—since her 2017 record Masseduction. “Pay Your Way in Pain” reinvents Clark’s sound once again, this time utilising a dirty synth line and psychedelic backing vocals to produce a sleazy funk rock track reminiscent of David Bowie’s Young Americans era.
Accordingly, Clark’s hazy new music video evokes films from the ’70s. Under Bill Benz’s direction, the singer struts and dances along to “Pay Your Way in Pain” on a studio dancefloor.
“I feel like we live in a world where we’re often asked to choose between surviving and dignity,” Clark recently told NMEFrom her new album, ‘Daddy’s Home.’ of the new single. “Part of it is like blues for 2021. It’s also about how there’s nothing that I’ve done in my life that didn’t involve some sort of struggle. Some of those struggles are really worthy ones to have and something great can come of them.”
Daddy’s Home will arrive on May 14 via Loma Vista. Watch the clip for “Pay Your Way in Pain” here:
