Mannequin Pussy have announced their new EP Perfect with the release of its cathartic first single “Control.”
It has been almost two years since the Philadelphia punk rock band dropped their third album, Patience. They spent most of 2020 separated due to the pandemic, which ended up informing their songwriting for Perfect. After enduring social distancing and internet-fueled anxiety for months on end, Mannequin Pussy checked into a studio with producer Will Yip to see what they could write.
“We just figured if we forced ourselves into this situation where someone could hit ‘record,’ something might come out,” vocalist Missy said in a statement. “We’d never written that way before.”
Mannequin Pussy have also released a video for “Control,” which Missy directed, where the singer wields a sword and axe to destroy a makeshift bedroom. The video and single come a few days after Mannequin Pussy revealed the departure of guitarist Thanasi Paul, who’d left the band at the end of 2020.
“Near the end of last year, Thanasi left the band to begin a new chapter of his life,” the now-three-piece band wrote on Instagram. “It’s big shoes to fill but we’re embracing the changes and are ready for all the music that will come next. Onto the new era!”
Perfect will arrive on May 21 via Epitaph Records. Watch the video for “Control” here:
