TSOL put a punk spin on Amerie’s “1 Thing”

A love song turned political diatribe.

It only took them 14 years, but Southern Californian punk veterans TSOL have covered Amerie’s 2005 song, “1 Thing,” turning the go-go-influenced chart hit into a pointed political diatribe.

TSOL’s larger-than-life frontman Jack Grisham first heard “1 Thing” when it was released. And he was a fan: “Fucking infectious, man, the way that groove keeps rolling, and she’s such a great vocalist,” he said in a statement. “The lyrics were your basic relationship trip but then it hit me, this isn’t just a song about some dude. These lyrics read like a song to a system or a government that’d been up to no good.”

TSOL have certainly taken “1 Thing” down different roads in sonic and lyrical interpretation, but don’t worry: Their cover is still catchy as hell, which speaks to the songwriting chops of its original composers, Amerie and Rich Harrison. The growling guitar solo and dramatic backing vocals TSOL have added towards the end of the song don’t hurt, either.
