Tom Morello has released a new EP Comandante, which features an homage to the late Eddie Van Halen and a guitar duel with fellow shredder Slash.
The Rage Against the Machine axeman dropped the five-track EP last week, calling it “more than a love letter to the electric guitar.” On social media, he wrote, “It’s a sonic assertion that six strings and a cranked amp can challenge the boundaries of what’s possible.”
He added, “During these chaotic times can the guitar serve as a divining rod for truth, soul and justice at maximum volume?? On Comandante we aim to find out!”
Comandante opens with a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child,” followed closely by “Interstate 80,” featuring the top-hatted Guns N’ Roses guitarist. There’s also “Secretariat,” which Morello has dedicated to the late Van Halen.
The EP comes a few months after the song “You Belong to Me,” which was inspired by the slave rebellion led by Nat Turner. In 2018, Morello released the solo album The Atlas Underground.
Morello was due to reunite with Rage Against The Machine this year, marking the end of their nine-year hiatus with a highly anticipated North American tour—which is now off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Morello also released a video for “Interstate 80.” Watch it below:
