Rock had a few moments to shine at the 2019 Grammys, what with Lady Gaga’s glam rock rendition of “Shallow” and St Vincent’s thrilling collaboration with Dua Lipa. Beyond the hustle and bustle of music’s biggest night, however, new song releases continued to pour in. Here are three new rock tracks you should know about.
REM’s Peter Buck and Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker lead the supergroup Filthy Friends, who made their debut two years ago with Invitation. Now, their sophomore album Emerald Valley’s on the horizon, led by the rollicking single “Last Chance County.”
Rain Phoenix—sister of the dearly departed River—has released a new song with another REM alumnus, Michael Stipe. The tender, meditative “Time is the Killer” leads a short project, Time Gone, which includes songs the Phoenix siblings wrote in the ’90s as the band Aleka’s Attic.
British rising sensation YUNGBLUD invited Halsey and Blink-182’s Travis Barker to jump on his new song, “11 Minutes,” because they shared the same vision: updating rock music. “At the end of the day we’re all rock kids,” YUNGBLUD commented. “We grew up with a mutual adoration for the genre so it completely makes sense that we would come together and try to modernize it.”
