The Flaming Lips have put together an absurdly wonderful rendition of “Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy.”
The tune, which premiered on Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas in 1977, is fondly remembered for David Bowie and Crosby’s impeccable harmonies. And Flaming Lips’ cover is a faithful tribute to the classic carol, with a few bizarre visuals thrown into the mix: Roman costumes, Smurf-like makeup, psychedelic frames, and lead singer Wayne Coyne dressed up as a king.
Earlier this month, the band announced their 15th studio album, King’s Mouth, which will arrive on April 13. In the meantime, fans can enjoy a recently released compilation—Seeing the Unseeable: The Complete Studio Recordings of the Flaming Lips 1986-1990—that features the group’s greatest hits and some rare, early tracks.
