Kings of Leon have dropped their brand-new album When You See Yourself, which has been released as a non-fungible token (NFT).
The follow-up to the band’s 2016 album Walls, When You See Yourself features the previously released songs “The Bandit” and “100,000 People.” However, the album’s standout moment is issued by closing track “Fairytale,” which weaves an ethereal soundscape out of hazy shoegaze washes of reverb and delicate acoustic guitarwork.
Aside from being available online and in physical formats, Kings of Leon have also released their album as a NFT, making them the first band to do so, according to Rolling Stone. The tokens are a form of cryptocurrency that differ from Bitcoin and Dogecoin, which means they don’t carry an inherent dollar value but hold art in some form—whether that be in a visual format, music or access to some other perk.
While Bitcoin and Dogecoin can be spent on goods or used to buy other cryptocurrencies, NFTs form part of a blockchain, which means that owners will possess an exclusive piece of collectible digital art.
Three different types of NFTs will be available for purchase over a limited two-week period with Kings of Leon’s new album. Called the “NFT Yourself” series, the tokens offer a premium album, golden tickets with front-row seats at their shows for life and audiovisual art.
