Stream Japanese Breakfast’s “2042,” “Posing in Bondage”

Two formerly vinyl-only tracks, now online.

Last year, Polyvinyl Record Co invited a few musicians to participate in the third edition of its 4-Track Single Series. Japanese Breakfast were one of them, and the two songs the band recorded, “2042” and “Posing in Bondage,” have just been made available online.

Co-produced by the indie rock band’s Michelle Zauner and her longtime collaborator Craig Hendrix at their studio in Philadelphia, the two tracks present two of JBrekkie’s many facets. “2042” is a jangly, guitar-driven ditty, while “Posing in Bondage” a slower jam that incorporates a drum machine and atmospheric synths.

As you might have guessed from the name of the series, every artist recorded their contributions on a humble four-track recorder. “We sent this Tascam four-track cassette recorder to the first artist, they recorded two songs to tape, then mailed the recorder to the next artist to do the same,” Polyvinyl explains on its site. The songs were then compiled into and sold as limited-edition box sets.
