‘Stranger Things’ actor Finn Wolfhard drops debut single with his band, Calpurnia

Catchy, feel-good and oozing reckless abandon, "City Boy" is everything you'd expect from an immensely talented teen.

Looks like Finn Wolfhard’s done chasing supernatural beings. The Stranger Things star, who plays Mike Wheeler in the Netflix series, yesterday dropped a new single—and an accompanying video—with his indie rock band, Calpurnia.

The song, “City Boy,” is a jangling, life-affirming and all-too-hummable number. Wolfhard, on the guitars and lead vocals, betrays his age with lyrics about being a “city fool” in comparison to his crush’s “city tool” of a boyfriend. But the brash, urgent production on it, courtesy of Twin Peaks’ Cadien Lake James, more than makes up for the adolescent vibes. There’s even a garage-y guitar solo in there.

Likewise, the video for the track will make you nostalgic for your teenage years. In it, Wolfhard and his mates—bassist Jack Anderson, drummer Malcolm Craig and lead guitarist Ayla Tesler-Mabe—mess around in a studio, doing the things most 15-year-olds would do.

“This video is a look into a day in the studio working on our record with Cadien, filmed and edited by our now great buddy Josiah Marshall,” Tesler-Mabe said. “Hopefully the video can convey how much fun this whole experience was for all of us, and that this music is really just the product of a bunch of friends who love music coming together to create something.”

“City Boy” is the first single off the Canadian band’s debut EP, on Royal Mountain Records, which is slated to arrive in the spring.
