Savages vocalist Jehnny Beth has released her debut solo album, To Love is to Live.
The record comes four years after Savages’ last album, Adore Life. Since then, the members of the London-based post-punk band have been spending time working on their own solo projects. For Beth, that included a collaboration with Gorillaz, a radio show on Beats 1 and her own solo record.
Beth fluctuates between industrial volatility and soft vulnerability through avant-garde genre clashes on the record. Guests on To Love is to Live include Peaky Blinders actor Cillian Murphy, IDLES vocalist Joe Talbot and the xx’s Romy Madley Croft. Nine Inch Nails’ Atticus Ross, Flood and Beth’s longtime collaborator Johnny Hostile contributed production, no doubt bolstering the record’s ever-present industrial edge.
To Love is to Live arrived alongside a NSFW animated short film of the single “We Will Sin Together” that depicts Beth in five historical roles as an alabaster figure. “The embodiment of different voices, and this whole notion of embracing the masculine and feminine characteristics of identity was the main starting point for us,” the video’s co-director Tom Hingston said in a statement. “The record has an attitude and a driving intent—there is a rawness from her lyrics and the production which doesn’t sound like anything you’ve heard before.”
