PJ Harvey releases two songs from ‘All About Eve’ soundtrack

PJ Harvey has unveiled “The Moth” and “Descending,” two songs from her upcoming soundtrack to the stage production of All About Eve, currently playing on London’s West End.

Both tracks showcase Harvey’s versatile songwriting. Multi-talented actress and All About Eve star Lily James delivers a fine vocal performance on “The Moth,” cutting from hushed lows to warbling falsetto within moments while a muted orchestra fortifies the emotion in her voice.

“Descending,” on the other hand, carries a largely instrumental sound while jazz-inspired drums free-flow from the midpoint. Synth notes walk down—befitting the song’s title—and the sporadic percussion builds into a crashing pinnacle before the abrupt conclusion.

Originally published as the short story The Wisdom of Eve in 1946 and famously adapted for the silver screen in 1950, All About Eve follows the strained relationship of an older Broadway star (played by Gillian Anderson in the current West End production) and a besotted, ambitious fan (played by James) who plots to usurp the performer’s success and lifestyle.

The 2019 play’s accompanying soundtrack, featuring original compositions by Harvey, will be her first full-length release since 2016’s The Hope Six Demolition Project. It arrives April 12.
