Backed by a seven-piece band all wearing her signature skeleton onesie, Bridgers kicked off the double performance with “Kyoto.” She then returned for “I Know the End,” before channeling her inner Pete Townshend by repeatedly bashing her guitar into a sparking monitor.
The stunt garnered criticism from some SNL viewers. “Why did this woman, Phoebe Bridgers, destroy her guitar on SNL?” read one tweet. “I mean, I didn’t care much for the song either, but that seemed extra.”
Bridgers, of course, couldn’t help but it back at her critics. “Got some really great feedback from my performance ! next time I’ll just burn it and it will be more expensive,” she quipped on Instagram.
Bridgers had previously performed “Kyoto” live, on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Her critically acclaimed sophomore album Punisher was released last June, and has earned the California native four Grammy nominations in November: Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for “Kyoto,” as well as Best Alternative Music Album and Best New Artist.
Despite the pandemic, the singer has been busy with new material, having released her orchestral Copycat Killer EP in November and collaborating with artists such as Julien Baker, Arlo Parks, and Courtney Barnett.
