Los Angeles group Phantom Planet have officially reunited, releasing “Balisong,” their first single in over a decade.
Built around an ominous bassline with a jagged surf-rock amble, the track is singer Alex Greenwald’s love letter to… butterfly knives. “It’s something that is really easily concealed but with the right know-how can be easily pulled out and is sharp as hell. I just went down the rabbit hole with that and the band loved the song and it was one of the first ones we did,” he explained to Billboard.
This year, Phantom Planet celebrate the 25th anniversary of their formation. Their last album was 2008’s Raise the Dead, though they originally rose to fame with “California,” a song they penned with founding drummer and actor Jason Schwartzman that became the theme of The OC.
As far as comeback tracks go, “Balisong” isn’t bad at all. Check it out here:
