Perfume Genius’ two new videos are inspired by… porn

Although "Lulla" and "Jory" are gentle, piano-led pieces, their videos are pretty NSFW.

There’s a scene in This is Spinal Tap where Nigel Tufnel hammers out a delicate, melancholic melody on the piano. When asked for the title, he deadpanned, “‘Lick My Love Pump.’” And the two new Perfume Genius videos—one was released yesterday and the other a week ago—are similar in spirit. Kinda.

Both “Jory” and “Lulla” are chamber pop pieces that are as soft as snow. Mike Hadreas, the brains behind Perfume Genius, lets his voice dip to a whisper or a breath while keys slowly tinkle around it. So using clips culled from vintage porn flicks as the bedrock of both videos is downright bizarre—or, in other words, par-for-the-course Perfume Genius.

Perfume Genius has been on the down-low for a minute now; he dropped his last album in May of last year. But with this pair of releases, the rumor mill has started grinding away, and fans are speculating this could be a teaser of an upcoming Record Store Day release.
