In our age of Photoshop and elaborate motion graphics, there’s still nothing like hand-crafted art. Case in point: Neko Case’s new video for “Last Lion of Albion,” off her recent album Hell-On.
The breathtaking clip follows the titular lion across various landscapes as charted in the song, from the “tiny business lake” in the beginning, flowing over silver dollars embossed with the lion’s likeness, to the “cliff of your sweet revenge.”
The video was helmed by artist Laura Plansker, whose intricate creations convey both whimsy and wonder. “Her work perfectly balances humor and darkness in a way that breaks my heart. She has a way of making something so artificial so very alive,” Case said in a statement.
“The turning of the lion’s head to look at the sky, or its own reflection, makes me cry my eyes out. There is so much straight-ahead compassion in Laura’s work, there’s no need to manipulate [the] emotion[s] of the viewer. It is the perfect balance.”
