Listen to Yo La Tengo’s first album in five years

‘There’s a Riot Going on’ wants to provide an “alternative to anger and despair” in today's world, say the indie rock vets.

Yo La Tengo on Friday released their 15th album, There’s a Riot Going on, marking the indie rock legends’ first full-length of original material since 2013’s Fade. Scroll down to stream the entire record via Spotify.

The 15-song LP, off Matador Records, is an ambitious one. It takes its name from the politically charged Sly and the Family Stone album, There’s a Riot Goin’ on, which addressed the civil rights movement of the ’60s and ’70s. So you know Yo La Tengo’s version will be as heavy.

“In 1971, when the nation appeared to be on the brink of violently coming apart, Sly and the Family Stone released There’s a Riot Goin’ on, an album of dark, brooding energy,” the band said. “Now, under similar circumstances, Yo La Tengo have issued a record with the same name but with a different force, an album that proposes an alternative to anger and despair.”
