The prolific (Sandy) Alex G—aka Alexander Giannascoli—has released his album House of Sugar.
Giannascoli may only be 26, but House of Sugar is his eighth full-length release and the follow-up to 2017’s Rocket. In 2016, he arranged and played guitars on Frank Ocean’s albums Blonde and Endless.
House of Sugar is a challenging but ultimately rewarding listen, replete with dissonant folk tracks, experimental instrumentals and startlingly gorgeous cuts like lead single “Gretel.”
A live audience applauds on the closing track “SugarHouse,” which marks the first time Giannascoli has included a live recording on a studio album. He sings over shimmering saxophones on the track: “I won’t be forgotten / Let ’em bury me in the sand / When our children go digging for answers / I hope they can put me together again.”
