“Gainesville,” a second song from the first posthumous Tom Petty collection, An American Treasure, has been released.
The 60-song box set, planned for a September 28 release, will feature a laundry list of previously unheard tracks, demos, live performances and more by the late legend. “Gainesville” is a prime example: The song was recorded in the 1998 sessions that culminated in Echo, but never made the final cut.
“Gainesville” pays homage to the late rocker’s hometown in Florida. It’s a bittersweet listen, even if you’re unfamiliar with Petty’s work—which is precisely the point of the whole collection. “If you knew nothing about the guy,” said Ryan Ulyate, Petty’s longtime producer, “it would still be a really good set of songs you could get into and love. It’s designed to tell you a story.”
