Kevin Shields, Brian Eno team up for Record Store Day release

The My Bloody Valentine frontman and ambient music legend will launch "The Weight of History" 12-inch on the big day.

If you thought last year’s collab between Kevin Shields and Brian Eno was gonna be a one-off, well, here’s good news for you. The My Bloody Valentine man and ambient music guru yesterday announced a new track for Record Store Day 2018: “The Weight of History.”

While the track itself—or a snippet of it—hasn’t been shared, it’s safe to assume it’ll follow the mold of the pair’s previous collaboration, “Only Once Away My Son.” In other words, a sprawling drone odyssey with churning synths, incidental sounds and Shields’ trademark ‘glide guitar.’ Both “The Weight of History” and “Only Once Away My Son” will be released as a double A-side 12-inch on Record Store Day 2018, off Opal Records.

Shields has been lying low for a minute now. My Bloody Valentine’s last release, the acclaimed mbv, dropped in 2013, but the shoegazers promise that there’s a new album coming this summer. “The mbv album […] feels more meandery and not as concise,” he said in an interview. “This [new] one is like if somebody took that and dropped some acid on it or created a dimensional clash or something. It’s more all over the place.”
