Johnny Marr’s new solo single sounds just like The Smiths

“Hi Hello” has all of the jangle and none of Morrissey’s moroseness.

If Johnny Marr had his way, guitar jangle would never go out of style. His new song, “Hi Hello,” is as much a second wind for the former guitarist of The Smiths as it is a celebration of the sound that made the Madchester scene what it was.

The track comes off Call the Comet, Marr’s solo studio effort that arrives on June 15. And to those fans who still adore The Smiths, “Hi Hello,” is right up your alley—even without the Prince of Gloom on it.

Everything, from the reverb-y production to the cascading guitar riffs to Marr’s own vocal melodies, makes it seem bands like Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses never left the charts. As a #throwback, it doesn’t get better than this.
