Joan Jett & the Blackhearts yearn for a “Fresh Start”

A song off the soundtrack to the upcoming documentary, ‘Bad Reputation.’

Joan Jett & the Blackhearts have released their first song in five years, “Fresh Start.”

The rollicking track was exclusively recorded for the soundtrack to the upcoming documentary Bad Reputation, which chronicles Jett’s musical journey from her childhood to her time in The Runaways and beyond. Bad Reputation, which features interviews with Iggy Pop, Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and others, is out September 28.

On “Fresh Start,” Jett, whose last album with the Blackhearts was 2013’s Unvarnished, sounds as badass and defiant as she always has. “Rewind the tape / Reset the clock / This time, we’re not gonna stop,” she declares in the chorus.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jett said the song is about keeping the rock ’n’ roll flame alive as she gets older.

“Sometimes you need to say to yourself, ‘Am I still enjoying what I’m doing? I need to find the fire again,’” she said. “Part of it was just thinking about rock in general. It’s always been a young person’s game, writing about sex, love and partying. As rock and rollers get older, what do they write about? I’m not sure there’s an answer, but we’re looking for it.”
