Jenny Lewis, Bill Murray drop a surprise Drake cover

The longtime friends reunite for a rendition of “Laugh Now Cry Later.”

Jenny Lewis has recruited her enigmatic friend and actor Bill Murray for a cover of Drake’s latest single, “Laugh Now Cry Later.”

The surprise collaboration turns the club staple into a loosely rendered moody cover with Lewis handling a bass guitar while Murray softly plays a kick drum and muted snare. It’s not a full—or seemingly rehearsed—cover from Lewis and Murray, but the performance was nevertheless mystifying.

A video of the pair’s rendition was posted to Lewis’ Instagram account just before Christmas, making it the first time the two stars have publicly appeared together since Sofia Coppola’s 2015 Netflix special, A Very Murray Christmas.

Murray’s love of music has been well established. The actor embarked on the international New Worlds tour with cellist Jan Vogler and has enjoyed sporadic appearances in dive bars and secret parties over the years. Lewis, on the other hand, dropped her last album On the Line in 2019. In February this year, the singer appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk to perform the album cuts “Rabbit Hole” and “Do Si Do.”
