Jay Som—aka Melina Duterte—has released a new video for “Tenderness,” the latest single from her upcoming third studio LP, Anak Ko.
The track begins with Duterte’s signature bedroom pop production, featuring lo-fi vocals layered over a simple drum loop. The chorus then kicks in with jazzy drum grooves and funk-inspired instrumentation that channel ’70s soft rock. “Show me / Before you haunt me on the screen / Will my affection pull the strings? / Another forgotten memory,” she croons.
The single also arrived with a visual directed by Wild Life Films. Colorful and campy, it features Duterte and her crew performing and dancing against sparkly backdrops.
“[The song] is definitely about scrolling on your phone and seeing a person and it just haunts you, you can’t escape it,” the Filipino-American musician explained in a press statement. “I have a weird relationship to social media and how people perceive me—as this person that has a platform, as a solo artist and this marginalized person. That was really getting to me.”
“Tenderness” follows the release of “Superbike,” both of which will appear on Anak Ko. It arrives August 23 via Polyvinyl Records.
