Japanese Breakfast (aka Michelle Zauner) has announced her new album Jubilee with a self-directed music video for its lead single “Be Sweet.”
Jubilee will be Zauner’s follow-up to her 2017 sophomore album Soft Sounds from Another Planet. The new single features a playful ’80s pop-inspired beat and busy bassline, making “Be Sweet” an exciting first glimpse of the third Japanese Breakfast record.
“After spending the last five years writing about grief, I wanted our follow-up to be about joy,” Zauner said in a statement. “For me, a third record should feel bombastic and so I wanted to pull out all the stops for this one. I wrote ‘Be Sweet’ with Jack Tatum from Wild Nothing a few years ago. I’ve been holding onto it for so long and am so excited to finally put it out there.”
Zauner also directed the X-Files-inspired video for “Be Sweet,” which features Zauner and Mannequin Pussy’s Marisa Dabice as FBI agents who investigate extra-terrestrial sightings, planning stakeouts and conducting research on antiquated computers.
Jubilee will arrive on June 4 via Dead Oceans. Watch the “Be Sweet” clip here:
