James Bay goes back to basics on ‘Oh My Messy Mind’ EP

A magnificent return to form.

Last Friday, James Bay dropped a new EP, Oh My Messy Mind, that longtime fans of his will love.

The opener “Peer Pressure” is a collaboration with singer-songwriter Julia Michaels that was previously released in February. With a thunderous roll of drums, Michaels slides into the track, circling Bay’s vocals as he builds into his customary full-bodied roar. Further along the EP, “Rescue” sounds as if it was lifted directly from Bay’s breakout debut, 2015’s Chaos and the Calm, with its choir choruses and strong piano progression.

Oh My Messy Mind closes with “Break My Heart Right”, a soul-crushing piano ballad. “You tear me up and wreck my dreams, I hold your hand when I’m asleep, I don’t mind falling for a lifetime ’cause you break my heart right,” Bay declares, aiming to melt the stoniest of hearts.
