Imagine Dragons have just released their video for their ballad “Next to Me,” and it’s a stunner. With its cinematic shots and tragic narrative, the 11-minute-long tearjerker is more a short film than music video, with frontman Dan Reynolds in the leading role.
Sweeping, harrowing visuals of rural America set the backdrop for the song about love and loyalty. In the video, Reynolds plays a desperate man whose unfortunate circumstances lead him to commit murder. He gets arrested and imprisoned, longing to return to (who else) the love of his life. There’s a twist right at the end, but we won’t spoil it for you, so grab a cuppa and watch the vid for yourself.
“I wrote this song about the strains of the relationships in my own life and the beauty of enduring love,” said the singer. “After late-night conversations with Mark Pellington [the director of the video] about life and his passion behind his vision for the film, we knew we wanted to take the journey with him.”
“Next to Me” was released in February, and is the fourth single from the band’s third studio album, Evolve.
