Knock knock, who’s there? It’s The New Pornographers, with a fresh single titled “The Surprise Knock.”
If this infectious track sounds like a throwback to, well, old New Pornographers, that’s not an accident. “Why don’t we play this song like New Pornographers 2005?” was the question that directed this version of “The Surprise Knock,” frontman and songwriter AC Newman revealed in a statement.
“I thought enough time has passed that I feel like I can play songs that sort of sound like a classic sound and not feel like I’m repeating myself, because it’s been so long,” he explained. “That was definitely a part of it: just wanting to… I hate to say ‘get back,’ but just get more slightly raucous and sounding more like a band.”
“The Surprise Knock” is the second single from The New Pornographers’ eighth studio album, In the Morse Code of Brake Lights. The 11-track record will arrive September 27 via Collected Work Records, the Canadian band’s own imprint, in collaboration with Concord Records.
