Phoebe Bridgers and Courtney Barnett have shared a live cover of Gillian Welch’s 2001 song, “Everything is Free.”
The pair performed their dreamy rendition over the weekend during the Newport Folk Festival’s virtual concert. The duet was live-streamed from the singers’ respective homes in Los Angeles and Melbourne.
Bridgers took the lead on vocals while Barnett played the guitar, harmonizing with the former on the opening and final refrain. “’Cause everything is free now / That’s what I said / No one’s gotta listen to / The words in my head,” they sing.
The Newport Folk Festival also featured performances from Roger Waters, Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell, Ben Harper, Leon Bridges, Sharon Van Etten and more.
Last week, Bridgers released a video for “I Know the End,” the closing track on her newest album, Punisher. Meanwhile, Barnett dropped her last LP in 2018, Tell Me How You Really Feel. According to NME, the Australian singer-songwriter teased that she’s got new “soft folk songs” on the way.
