Sister trio Haim have returned with a video for their latest single, “Summer Girl.”

The track is a soft pop number with a jazzy drum groove and laid-back saxophone riffs. Frontwoman Danielle shines throughout “Summer Girl,” her mellow vocals lending a warm glow to the song. “Lightning in your eyes, you can’t speak / Falling from the sky, down to me / I see it in your face, I’m relief / I’m your summer girl,” she sings.

The accompanying visual for the single was directed by filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, who also worked on previous Haim videos for “Little of Your Love” and “Right Now.” The breezy clip stars the sisters taking to the streets of California, casually stripping off layers of clothes and welcoming a balmy summer.

As Danielle revealed in a series of tweets, “Summer Girl” was heavily inspired by Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.” It was also co-produced by frequent collaborators Rostam and Ariel Rechtshaid. The latter, who is also Danielle’s partner, was diagnosed with cancer in 2017.

“I started the song when I found out my partner had cancer. I was on tour and felt like I was trying to send positive energy his way almost telepathically,” Danielle explained in a press statement. “Whenever I would come home in between shows I wanted to be his sunshine—his summer when he was feeling dark. His hope when he was feeling hopeless.”

“Summer Girl” is Haim’s newest music since their 2017 sophomore record, Something to Tell You. The trio have been teasing new material since the start of the year. Danielle also recently contributed vocals to several tracks on Vampire Weekend’s Father of the Bride LP.
