Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong covers “That Thing You Do!”

In honor of the late Adam Schlesinger, who wrote the song.

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong has covered “That Thing You Do!” from the film of the same name, which is one of the best-known songs by the late Adam Schlesinger.

“That Thing You Do!” is the hit song by The Wonders, the fictional one-hit-wonder at the center of the 1996 film, which was Tom Hanks’ directorial debut. It was written by Schlesinger, the founding bassist of Fountains of Wayne who also enjoyed a long career in composing for film, theatre and television.

Armstrong dedicated his cover to Schlesinger, who died of coronavirus complications on April 1. Armstrong’s rendition of “That Thing You Do!” comes as part of his No Fun Mondays cover series, which has so far included “Manic Monday” by The Bangles (with Bangles member Susanna Hoffs), “I Think We’re Alone Now” (the Ritchie Cordell composition popularized by Tommy James & The Shondells and Tiffany) and The Avengers’ “Corpus Christi.”

In February, Green Day released their latest album Father of All… It featured the tracks “Oh Yeah!”, “Fire Ready Aim” and “Father of All…”
