Ezra Furman has dropped his new single, “Calm Down aka I Should Not Be Alone,” the lead single from his forthcoming album, Twelve Nudes.
The singer wades into lo-fi territory on the song, wailing and screaming as he burrows his way through the track which boasts fuzz-laden guitars that build walls of surf rock sound.
The track was released alongside an animated video directed by Beth Jeans Houghton. The psychedelic clip uses a vibrant, comic book-inspired art style to depict a cartoon version of Furman being put through unpleasant situations: falling through the sky, being electrocuted and being stabbed.
“Desperate times make for desperate songs,” said Furman in a press release. “I wrote this in the summer of 2018, a terrible time. It’s the sound of me struggling to admit that I’m not okay with the current state of human civilization, in which bad men crush us into submission. Once you admit how bad it feels to live in a broken society, you can start to resist it, and imagine a better one.”
Twelve Nudes is due out August 30. Watch Furman’s video for “Calm Down aka I Should Not Be Alone” below:
