Dinosaur Jr drop new single “I Ran Away,” featuring Kurt Vile

‘Sweep it into Space’ will be the band’s first album since 2016.

Dinosaur Jr have shared “I Ran Away” featuring Kurt Vile, the first single to be cut from their upcoming album Sweep it into Space.

Sweep it into Space—which was supposed to be released mid-2020, but delayed due to the pandemic—will be Dinosaur Jr’s first LP since 2016’s Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not. The leading single dials back J Mascis’ roaring wall of fuzz to deliver an idyllic slice of indie rock, with Vile adding jangly 12-string acoustic guitar.

Vile, who also serves as a co-producer on Sweep it into Space, was the only non-member of Dinosaur Jr to join the band when they recorded their 12th studio album at Mascis’ Biquiteen Studio in Massachusetts. In a press release, Mascis explained that he was forced to mimic elements of Vile’s performance after COVID-19 interrupted their recording time together.

“I was listening to a lot of Thin Lizzy, so I was trying to get some of that dueling twin lead sound,” Mascis said. “But the recording session was pretty well finished by the time things really hit the fan. When the lockdown happened in March, that meant I was on my own. But it was cool.”

Sweep it into Space will arrive via Jagjaguwar on April 23. Listen to “I Ran Away” below:
