Cloud Nothings announce new album with “Am I Something”

The band will also celebrate the tenth anniversary of ‘Turning On.’

Cloud Nothings have announced their new LP The Shadow I Remember and released its lead single, “Am I Something.”

The raw new track marks the band’s reunion with acclaimed producer/engineer Steve Albini, who worked on their 2012 breakout album Attack on Memory. Its accompanying video is stuffed to the brim with surreal, retro computer-generated imagery. The clip places naked dancers amongst humanoid arcade machines, floating heads and a background of Buddha statues and theme park rides.

The landscape of the music video is actually a scene from director Lu Yang’s video game The Great Adventure of Material World. In a statement, she explained its significance: “[It] depicts an artistic reality where we are exploring and roaming, in a non-binary way, post-death delusions and the intermediate state of Bardo. Bardo has a particularly special meaning in Buddhism as the connecting point and intermediate state between life and death, past and future lives, waking and sleep, and the space in-between.”

Cloud Nothings’ previous LP The Black Hole Understands was recorded during isolation and arrived as a surprise release on Bandcamp. That album took shape quite quickly for the band, scattered across the United States and sending files back and forth to each other, resulting in the drums being recorded in Cleveland and the guitars, bass and vocals tracked in Philadelphia.

Alongside the news of their seventh studio album, Cloud Nothings also announced a tenth anniversary reissue of their debut LP Turning On. The album will be reissued with its original tracklist via Carpark Records on January 29.

The Shadow I Remember will arrive on February 26, 2021. Watch the video for “Am I Something” here:
