Bruce Springsteen features on Bleachers’ new song “Chinatown”

A love letter to their shared New Jersey heritage.

Bleachers—aka the indie pop project of Jack Antonoff—has returned with a new single, “Chinatown,” featuring rock legend Bruce Springsteen.

The accompanying visual, directed by Carlotta Kohl, takes listeners on a trip from New York to the duo’s hometown of New Jersey, as the pair take turns on the song’s chorus. “With a girl like you / My Chinatown baby / Sittin’ on your front porch / Crying out the crazy,” they sing.

The single dropped alongside another Bleachers track, “45.” Both songs are due to appear on a planned 2021 album.

Speaking about the new music, Antonoff explained in a statement: “To further understand who you are pushes you to further understand where you are from and what that looks and sounds like. There are pieces in that that are worth carrying forever and pieces worth letting die. ‘Chinatown’ and ‘45’ are both the story of this—‘Chinatown’ through someone else, ‘45’ through the mirror.”

Antonoff called working with The Boss “the honor of a lifetime,” adding, “He is the artist who showed me that the sound of the place I am from has value and that there is a spirit here that needs to be taken all over the world.”

Just last month, Springsteen released his 20th album Letter to You. Antonoff has likewise kept busy, spending the last few years working with the likes of Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey as a producer.
