Big Thief have announced Two Hands, their second album for 2019, with the release of their thrilling new single “Not.”

“Not” decries a list of things that, as you may have guessed, it simply isn’t. “Not the meat of your thigh, nor your spine tattoo, nor your shimmery eye, nor the wet of the dew,” Adrianne Lenker sings. A roaring solo emerges late in the track, blending an extended outro with the bulk of the song with unwavering grace.

The New York band started recording Two Hands shortly after completing UFOF, their third studio album which was released in May. While the band labored on UFOF in a lush studio, they stripped back the recording process for Two Hands by recording the tracks live with little to no overdubs. That raw, visceral sound is evident in “Not,” and will undoubtedly color the rest of the album.

Two Hands has the songs that I’m the most proud of; I can imagine myself singing them when I’m old,” Lenker shared in a press statement. “Musically and lyrically, you can’t break it down much further than this. It’s already bare-bones.”

Two Hands will be out October 11 via 4AD. Listen to the full and edited versions of “Not” now:
