Big Red Machine—aka Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and The National’s Aaron Dessner—have announced their new album with the single “Latter Days.”
Featuring Anaïs Mitchell on vocals, the track anticipates the release of their upcoming sophomore album How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?, which is set for release on August 27. “I recall it all forever / How it found us where we lay / With our arms around each other / In the latter days,” Mitchell and Vernon sing in unison on the contemplative chorus.
How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? follows Big Red Machine’s 2018 self-titled debut, and will notably feature a guest appearance from Taylor Swift, who tapped both Vernon and Dessner to work on her 2020 sister albums, Folklore and Evermore.
Also contributing to the Big Red Machine record are Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold, Ilsey, Sharon Van Etten, Lisa Hannigan, Naeem, My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Nova, La Force, Ben Howard, and This Is the Kit.
The duo announced the album and its collaborators with an Instagram post on June 29.
“This is all music I initially generated and feel emotionally connected to, but it has been very interesting to hear how different people relate to it and how different voices collide with it,” Dessner said in a press statement. “That’s what makes it special. With everyone that’s on this record, there’s an openness, a creative generosity, and an emotional quality that connects it all together.”
Last year, besides Swift, Bon Iver collaborated with Brittany Howard and The Japanese House. His last full-length was 2019’s i,i, whereas The National’s last studio album was I Am Easy to Find, released that same year. In 2020, Dessner’s National bandmate Matt Berninger dropped his first solo album.
