Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard shares new single, “He Loves Me”

An intense rock devotional featuring Nate Smith on drums.

Brittany Howard has released the solo song “He Loves Me,” an ode to the unrelenting affection of the Christian God. It’s the latest track to come from Jaime, the Alabama Shakes leader’s debut solo album.

“He Loves Me” samples a sermon by Houston preacher Reverend Terry K Anderson, the snippets nestling within a deep groove carved out by Nate Smith’s powerful drums and accented by bristling guitar lines.

“When my older sister passed away, it took its toll on our family,” Howard said of the song in a press release. “We grew apart from one another… I thought God had intended to hurt us or punish us, but I later realized that I found God in music and I found God in my voice. I learned that He always had a plan for myself and my family. That is what ‘He Loves Me’ is about.”

Jaime, which is named after Howard’s late sister, also features “History Repeats” and “Stay High.” The latter received a heartwarming visual treatment starring Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor Terry Crews.
