A week after announcing his third album, ZAYN has unveiled Nobody is Listening.
On the 11-track release, the former One Direction singer opts for laid-back, smoky R&B tunes, a departure from the maximalist pop as heard on 2018’s Icarus Falls and his 2016 debut Mind of Mine. Here, ZAYN wears his heart on his sleeve, singing over acoustic guitar pluckings and tender piano melodies.
The album opens with “Calamity,” a raw, spoken-word track that delves into ZAYN’s personal demons. “I rap this, I say it for my sanity / Whatever the calamity, I did this for myself / Fuck all of your fantasies,” he says.
The singer also pays tribute to his partner Gigi Hadid, who recently gave birth to their daughter, with romantic odes like “When Love’s Around” and “Sweat.” But the album highlight comes in the form of “Tightrope,” a soothing love song that features an interpolation of Mohammed Rafi’s 1960 Bollywood classic, “Chaudhvin Ka Chand.”
“Are you the full moon or the sun? / Whatever you are, I swear to God, you are beyond compare,” ZAYN croons in Urdu.
