We are KING cover David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”

The first preview of label BBE Music’s upcoming Bowie tribute album.

For their first release in five years, We are KING have shared an ethereal cover of David Bowie’s hit “Space Oddity,” the first preview of BBE Music’s forthcoming tribute album Modern Love.

Released on January 8, which would have been the late legend’s 74th birthday, the group’s modern take on Bowie’s 1969 space epic is coated in gloriously expansive layers of reverb. By drawing out the late rock icon’s beautiful melodies with their own cosmic vocal harmonies, We are KING highlight their own virtuosic abilities in honoring—while evolving—an iconic track.

“There were so many amazing Bowie compositions to choose from but ‘Space Oddity’ has always been our favorite,” We are KING’s Amber and Paris Strother said in a statement. “It’s so visual; it has always felt like time travel in a song. It tells such a vivid and imaginative story of Major Tom’s trip through space and it was such a cool experience to reimagine what it’d be like on the voyage.”

Under project leaders Drew McFadden and BBE Music founder Peter Adarkhwah’s leadership, Modern Love will draw out the Starman’s connection to genres pioneered by artists of color—namely jazz, soul, R&B funk and gospel. Other contributing artists include Jeff Parker, L’Rain, Nia Andrews, Khruangbin and Meshell Ndegeocello.

Modern Love will arrive on May 28. Stream We are KING’s take on “Space Oddity” here:
