Victoria Monét is finally stepping into the limelight with her debut project, Jaguar.
On her new album, the famed songwriter—who nabbed four Grammy nominations for her work on Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next last year—celebrates the sounds of Motown, while putting her own modern twist on the genre.
“One of my favorite people of all the time is Smokey Robinson. So, I’m looking at his pinnacle of success,” she told Paper. “He was a songwriter and an artist at the same time, and equally as great. And that’s what I really want for myself, just to be able to balance that out and really give my gift to other people.”
“This project was my playground,” Monét added. “I felt like a wannabe Quincy Jones.”
The nine-track Jaguar includes her previous collaboration with Khalid and SG Lewis, “Experience,” as well as her 2019 track “Ass Like That.” “Moment,” a song she released back in February, also appears on the album.
Jaguar dropped alongside an animated music video for its title track. In the clip, Monét heads out to a tropical jungle and transforms into the ferocious feline. “Supersonic pussycat / Just like a jaguar, silky black / So let me climb your wood like that / You got nine times to come hit that,” she sings.
