Nigerian R&B sister duo VanJess have officially released their cover of Zhané’s ’90s classic, “Groove Thang.”
The cover was originally released in 2019 exclusively for Amazon Music’s global R&B Rotation playlist, which also featured artists like Khalid and Queen Naija. Now, a year later, VanJess’ rendition of “Groove Thang” has finally been made available on other major streaming platforms.
“Zhané is one of the most influential R&B groups of our time,” Jessica Nwokike from VanJess said in an earlier statement. “‘Groove Thang’ has such good vibes and positive energy, and it’s one of those songs that makes you happy once you hear it.”
For their cover, VanJess gave the Pronounced Jah-Nay cut a sleek modern makeover, but without completely altering the funky production. “We’re moving on, keeping strong / Don’t you let them steer you wrong / It’s a groove thang,” the sisters croon.
VanJess’ last album, Silk Canvas, arrived back in 2018. Last year, the duo released a compilation of Silk Canvas remixes, which featured contributions from Ari Lennox, Saba, MNEK, Xavier Omär and more.
