The Weeknd takes you behind the scenes in new video

‘He was Never There’ mashes up backstage footage, studio sessions, song fragments, and off-the-cuff audio recordings of The Weeknd and his crew.

Fans of Abel Tesfaye, known to the masses as The Weeknd, are probably still recovering from the surprise drop of his brilliant six-track mini-album, My Dear Melancholy. And now the R&B superstar has dropped another bolt from the blue: a behind-the-scenes clip set to album highlight “I was Never There.”

Described as a ‘docupoem,’ the video splices together fragments of the moody track with audio clips from The Weeknd, his producers and his collaborators, letting them play out over neon-soaked footage of the singer in the studio. It’s a moody, mysterious companion piece to one of the year’s hottest releases—and it continues to prove just how exciting a musician The Weeknd is.
