Grande adds a dreamy new verse to the remix, going from low registers to her signature whispery crooning. “Met you once under a Pisces moon / I kept my distance ’cause I know that you / Don’t like when I’m with nobody else / I couldn’t help it, I put you through hell,” she sings.
The new version of “Save Your Tears” was accompanied by a gorgeous and surreal animated visual, directed by Jack Brown and produced by Blinkink. In keeping with After Hours’ overarching storyline, the clip plays upon the theme of decapitation, depicting a cyborg version of Grande put together by The Weeknd’s red-jacketed character, who plays a mad scientist.
The remix was first teased on Monday (April 19), when the singers posted a snippet of the song on social media. This marks the third time the superstars have worked together, having previously collaborated on 2014’s “Love Me Harder” and “Off The Table,” the latter a cut off Ari’s latest record Positions.
This new take on “Save Your Tears” follows a series of After Hours remixes, which include “Blinding Lights” with Rosalía and “In Your Eyes” with Doja Cat. Last month, The Weeknd re-released his debut project House of Balloons, complete with original samples, to commemorate its 10th anniversary.
