The inimitable Sade has been inactive for the better part of the last decade, but this year she’s ended the drought with new music composed specially for film projects. Following her contribution to Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time a few months ago is a new song, “The Big Unknown,” for the forthcoming film Widows.
According to a press release, Sade wrote the track with Widows’ final scene in mind. She had a series of conversations with director Steve McQueen (who also directed Shame and 12 Years a Slave), who encouraged her to dig deep within herself to write about loss and survival.
The result is somber and heartbreakingly lyrical: Just take in the lines “No, I won’t surrender to this hard-hearted night / Though I know the sun’s gonna bring the palest of light.”
