Steve Lacy drops Prince-inspired single, “Playground”

‘Apollo XXI’ is just around the corner.

Steve Lacy draws inspiration from Prince on his new single, “Playground,” from his forthcoming album Apollo XXI.

The groovy, funk-inspired song features the Internet musician singing over jangly guitar riffs and a distorted bassline. “Know you wanna play ’round / Well, baby, I’m on the playground / Hop on up, get on down / And wiggle that thing that’s so round,” he sings.

“I think [‘Playground’ was made during] my Prince phase, where I was all Prince, but I also have my Dirty Projectors phase in there,” Lacy told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe. “It came with that riff, and then the hook came, and… I wrote the verses in that month, so I held on to that hook and everything for a while before I actually wrote the song.”

The musician also dropped a brief visual for the presumed album closer, “Outro Freestyle.” In the clip, Lacy and the singer Abra lock lips for a whole minute, before it cuts to them waking up together in bed.

“Playground” and “Outro Freestyle” are the latest releases from Lacy’s forthcoming debut solo album, Apollo XXI, due out this Friday. Last month, he made his solo comeback with the single “N Side.” Check out the tracks below.
