Serpentwithfeet releases intimate new album, ‘Deacon’

Lil Silva, Sampha and Nao feature on his sophomore record.

Josiah Wise, the R&B futurist behind Serpentwithfeet, has unveiled his second studio album, Deacon.

For the intimate follow-up to his 2018 debut Soil, Wise moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, tapping into the west coast’s sunny atmosphere. The result is a record that captures the joy of gay Black love.

“I originally approached this project wanting to make something that felt very sensuous. Something a lot softer, a lot more gentle than my previous work,” Wise said in a statement. “I wanted to create something that felt calm and restrained. This was my way of tapping into the energy many deacons possess.”

Wise recruited a number of artists to appear on Deacon, including production duo Take a Daytrip. Nao appears on “Heart Storm,” while Lil Silva and Sampha collaborate with the enigmatic musician on “Amir,” “Wood Boy” and “Fellowship.”
